The last living population of this species occurs only between Algeria and Tunisia (Wilson & Reeder, 1993). A population of C. e. bolivari or C. e. hispanicus in Morocco is the result of successful introductions, while the original C. e. barbarus is extinct in this country (Aulagnier & Thévenot, 1986). Its distribution map was first acquired from Haltenorth & Diller (1980), then updated on the basis of the more recent map in Kingdon (1997) (Fig. 8.5.1.a). Categorical-discrete (CD) distribution model Relatively wide habitat tolerance but mainly found in forest, oak woodland, maquis and grassy meadows (Kingdon, 1997; Stuart & Stuart, 1997).
