Once widely distributed throughout northern Africa from Morocco and Tunisia to Egypt , southwards to Mauritania and possibly Sudan , it now survives only in Chad and Niger (Wilson & Reeder, 1993; East, 1990). The scimitar-horned oryx has been reintroduced in Tunisia (East, 1996), and might still occasionally wander into Burkina Faso , Mali and Sudan , but all these data need confirmation. A distribution map was obtained from the accurate country maps in East (1990), as indicated by Dr. R. East ( 23 June '97 ) Categorical-discrete (CD) distribution model The species occurs in sub-desert steppe and arid grasslands; sometimes found in true desert (Kingdon, 1997; East, 1990).
