The species still occurs widely along rivers throughout its patchy range in Sub-Saharan Africa (Wilson & Reeder, 1993; Oliver, 1993). Its distribution map was acquired from Oliver (1993) and subsequently revised by Dr. H. Klingel ( 31 January ‘97 ), resulting in Fig.. Categorical-discrete (CD) distribution model The species’ daytime habitat is represented by a wide range of water bodies, including muddy wallows. For feeding it requires grasslands and will move several kilometres (up to 10) away from water every night to reach grazing areas. It is absent from forests, except near large rivers (Oliver, 1993; De Bie, 1991; Stuart & Stuart, 1997; Mills & Hes, 1997; Rowe-Rowe, 1994).
